What Is Numerology?
Numerology is a belief-based system that finds symbolic meaning in numbers derived from your name and date of birth. It is one of the oldest forms of symbolic analysis — with roots in ancient Babylon (Chaldean numerology) and ancient Greece (Pythagorean numerology) — and is still widely practised today, particularly in South Asian, East Asian, and New Age traditions.
The core premise of numerology is that every letter in the alphabet corresponds to a specific number (1–9 in most systems), and that the sum of these numbers — when applied to your name or birth date — produces a result that carries symbolic significance about your personality, purpose, and life patterns.
Numerology is not a science. There is no peer-reviewed research supporting its claims. It is best understood as a symbolic, philosophical tradition that many people find personally meaningful as a tool for self-reflection.

A complete numerology reading typically involves several different numbers, each derived from a different aspect of your identity. Here are the most important ones:
Life Path Number
Calculated from: Your full date of birth
The most important number in numerology. It describes the overarching themes, opportunities, and challenges of your life journey. Calculated by summing all digits in your birth date and reducing to a single digit.
Most widely used in Western/Pythagorean numerology.
Life Number
Calculated from: Your birth day only
Also called the birth number, this is derived from the day of the month you were born. It reveals your core personality traits and instincts. For example, born on the 29th → 2+9=11 → 1+1=2. Life number is 2.
The primary number used in Chaldean/Vedic numerology reports.
Destiny Number
Calculated from: All letters of your full name
Also called the expression number, this reveals your natural talents, abilities, and the direction your life is meant to take. It is calculated by converting all letters of your name to numbers and summing them.
Key in both Chaldean and Pythagorean systems.
Soul Urge Number
Calculated from: Only the vowels in your name
Also called the heart's desire number, this reveals your innermost motivations and what you privately want most from life. It uses only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) from your full name.
Especially emphasised in Pythagorean numerology.
Personality Number
Calculated from: Only the consonants in your name
This describes how others perceive you externally — the first impression you make. It uses only the consonants from your name and shows the outer layer of your character.
Useful for understanding social dynamics.
Personal Year Number
Calculated from: Birth day + birth month + current year
A number that changes every year and describes the themes and energy of each 12-month cycle. A personal year 1 is for new beginnings; a personal year 9 is for endings and completion.
Changes each calendar year — very practical for timing decisions.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean — Which System?
There are two main numerology systems, and they use different number-to-letter assignments. Understanding the difference helps you interpret results correctly.
Chaldean Numerology
- • Originated in ancient Babylonia (modern Iraq)
- • Assigns values 1–8 to letters (9 is sacred, unassigned)
- • Uses the name most commonly used, not necessarily the birth name
- • Places strong emphasis on compound (two-digit) numbers
- • Dominant in South Asia and the Middle East
- • Considered the older and more "vibrational" system
Pythagorean Numerology
- • Attributed to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras
- • Assigns values 1–9 sequentially (A=1, B=2…)
- • Uses the full birth name as recorded officially
- • Recognises master numbers: 11, 22, 33
- • Dominant in Western countries and New Age traditions
- • More systematic and widely taught
How to Calculate Your Name Number
Here is the process using the Chaldean system:
Step 1: Write your name in capitals. Example: RAHUL SHARMA
Step 2: Assign each letter its Chaldean value using the chart below.
Step 3: Sum all the values: R(2)+A(1)+H(5)+U(6)+L(3) = 17, S(3)+H(5)+A(1)+R(2)+M(4)+A(1) = 16. Total = 33.
Step 4: Note the compound number (33 — has its own meaning in Chaldean tradition).
Step 5: Reduce to single digit: 3+3 = 6. Name number is 6.
